Day 4. Friday 3 March 2023. Lake Hume Weir to Corowa

A warm day and a 9.00 a.m. start as we set off on a mainly flat 75km ride to Corowa Caravan Park on the banks of the Murray River.

The interesting little cafe full of all sorts of curios

at the extremely well-kept Lake Hume Caravan Park, did a very nice egg and bacon muffin

for breakfast.  Twinkletoes made sure he was well-fuelled for the ride ahead with a double helping,

washed down with a tasting paddle of the local Hume Dam gin while the Buddhess looked on approvingly.

Antonio assiduously studied the map book trying to work out which road exactly leads to Rome.

Before setting off for the day a quick trip was made to the Hume Weir
and dam.

Then it was off onto the Albury Cycle Trail which wound through parkland along the Murray River.  We stopped for coffee at the RiverDeck cafe set in a lovely park
right on the banks of the Murray before heading for the Willy Wonka Wetlands.  We were an impressive sight

as we wound our way through the twisting tracks. We were startled by the profusion of wildlife along the way.  Antonio tried to pluck a feather from a guguburra

(we thought it was a kookaburra but they may be related) but the bird had the last laugh

as he attempted to bite Antonio's head off.

We flew through a swarm of Bogong moths

before coming across this fearsome looking critter.

We made it safely through here and arrived at our destination

to find this area teeming with local fauna.  There was the loud-mouthed, yapping bush frog -
well - it didn't take us long to work out which was the frog but who was the loud-mouth and who was the yapper was a bit more difficult to decide.
We thought we'd seen a big butt when the wombat showed up

but he was soon outdone by an even more exotic creature.

The brush-tailed possum,

the tortoise,

the emu, they all put in an appearance, but all too soon we had to bid them farewell and head off along the Riverina Highway to Howlong
for lunch.  Chalkie was particularly interested

in what appeared to be half a cockroach in his dessert.  After eating it he confirmed that was indeed the case and lowered his rating of the cafe to 8/10.

Following lunch it was 30 clicks straight down the highway with a nice breeze behind us and SASMan leading the charge as we made our way to Corowa.

Accomodation here is not quite as luxurious as previous nights
and when Chalkie tried to beat the Office Manager down on the price, she pretty swiftly
gave him the two-fingered salute.

As a break from pub meals we opted for a bbq. No vegans or vegetarians here as SASMan proved a dab hand with the olive oil

then managed to get things really fired up
as the sausages and steaks sizzled away.

A sumptious spread
was soon laid out, and even sooner consumed.

Tomorrow we continue another 75kms along the Murray River to Borooga.
